The Ministry of Agriculture raised its estimate of pig stock losses, saying 1.52 million pigs died when the quake hit the country's largest pork-producing region two weeks ago. Beijing had previously estimated that 792,000 pigs had been killed. The ministry said there were still no reports of animal disease in the area. The ministry said 512 tonnes of disinfectant had been used to prevent the spread of disease among animals and people. Some 60,000 cows and 178,000 goats as well as 14 million poultry and rabbits were also killed. Local government officials said the province had taken measures to curb any possible rise in the price of pork, a major contributor to the decade-high level of inflation. Reuters.
