Last October, (2007), the Dog Rescue Center Samui www.samuidog.org made the decision to partner with some of the temples on the island & begin what is now known as, “The Temple Project”.
The goal is simple, to help more of the stray dog population on the island.
We provide on-site treatment & vaccinations on a weekly basis & also deliver as much food as is necessary every month. All dogs are brought to the shelter to be spayed/neutered & then are brought back ‘home’ after their recovery.
The monks work side by side with us in the treatment of the dogs, they help us to get close to them, as well as to hold them when they need to be given injections. This is much easier for them, because afterall, the monks are their caregivers, their family. After all is done for the day, the monks show their appreciation & gratitude with either a simple wai or with the offerings of food.
Another amazing thing that has transpired is the awareness of the villiagers around the temples. They have figured out on which day we will be there & they rush to us with their beloved pets and the stray dogs they sometimes feed, for mange treatments, vaccinations, etc.
We currently work with around 15 temples, totalling approximately 300 dogs, and the estimated cost to keep the project up & running is 25 Euro per animal.
Please Help Us Help by donating money to support this cause. By maintaining this project, we keep more dogs from having to come to the already full shelter, and provide them with everything they need to live a happy life!
